FIVE VP OPTIONS FOR PRESIDENT HARRIS

Updated: Jul 23

Joe Biden is a class act. I didn’t believe he needed to drop out of the race. Biden’s debate wasn’t ideal but Trump was incoherent the entire time. I’m so thankful for his service, character, and heart. He’s endured many personal losses and political attacks.

He’s done more than any other president in US history. Here are just a few of his accomplishments as President

  • The American Rescue Plan, funding the national COVID-19 vaccination campaign.

  • The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, a tangible commitment to rebuild our nation’s roads and bridges, upgrade our public transit, clean up pollution, and provide high-speed internet to every American.

  • The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant gun violence prevention legislation in 30 years, narrows the “boyfriend loophole,” expanding mental health and safety services in schools.

  • The CHIPS Act, returning manufacturing from overseas and creating good-paying union jobs.

  • Expanding health care for veterans through the PACT Act, the most significant expansion of benefits and services for toxic-exposed veterans in more than 30 years.

But since we're here, let's talk about these potential VP picks! I'm so happy for VP Harris, this is really a monumental moment.

Stacey Abrams

This Spellman alumna is a voting rights activist and New York Times bestselling author. She served as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2017, representing the 89th district. In 2018, Abrams ran for Governor of Georgia, becoming the first African American woman to be a major party’s nominee for governor in the United States. Abrams is a passionate and active force in Georgia. Her advocacy for strengthening the vote is legendary. Following her gubernatorial campaign, she established Fair Fight Action, an organization committed to ensuring fair elections and fighting voter suppression. Through her work, she has addressed voter suppression, engaged in legal battles, and mobilized voters across Georgia. President Harris could benefit from having someone so focused and dedicated to the integrity of America’s institutions beside her.

Pete Buttigieg

Mayor Pete is now Secretary of Transportation Pete! President Harris and Secretary Pete have been working together since the start of the Biden-Harris administration. During his tenure, he reinstated an Obama-era pilot program that ensures local hiring for public works projects. He is passionate about addressing the systemic racism embedded in our current infrastructure. He also has the significant task of overseeing $210 billion of discretionary grants from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Additionally, he is a husband and father of twins. I appreciate Buttigieg’s temperament; he plays hardball with the truth and a smile. He has already responded to notable events, and I believe the Vice President position would be an exciting challenge for him.

Keisha Lance Bottoms

Bottoms, another colleague, served as a Senior Advisor and Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement. The FAMU grad currently serves as a member of the President's Export Council. She served as the 60th Mayor of Atlanta and was the first person in Atlanta’s history to have worked in all three branches of government, serving as a judge and City Councilmember before being sworn in as mayor. She started her career as a prosecutor, representing children in juvenile court. The mother of four has served on the board of Families First, shares her personal story of adoption, and advocates on behalf of adoption and foster care. She was considered an option for Biden’s VP in 2020, and I think she would make an amazing VP now for President Harris.

Pramila Jayapal

One thing I like about Jayapal is that she doesn’t play games and stands on her principles. Since 2017, Congresswoman Jayapal has represented Washington's 7th congressional district as the first Indian-American woman to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. She’s the chair of the Progressive Caucus and advocates passionately for their concerns. Jayapal founded Hate Free Zone, now OneAmerica, after the September 11, 2001, attacks as an advocacy group for immigrant communities, registering new American citizens to vote and lobbying for immigration reform and related issues. They successfully sued the Bush Administration to prevent the deportation of over 4,000 Somalis across the country. Her latest work involves urging DHS to phase out the use of private, for-profit detention centers for immigrants in U.S. custody and consider alternatives to expanding the immigration detention system.

Cory Booker

The first African-American U.S. senator from New Jersey. He served as the Mayor of Newark from 2006–2013. I believe him to be extremely disciplined. He still lives in Newark's Central Ward today and is passionate about finding community solutions for affordable health care, environmental injustice, food insecurity, and our fractured criminal justice system. He helped write the First Step Act, which became law in December 2018. This act develops a risk and needs assessment system for the Bureau of Prisons to create a system to assess federal prisoners' recidivism risk and needs, placing them in programs and activities to reduce this risk.

Honorable Mentions

  • Jamaal Bowman - Recently lost his election, a vocal member of The Squad. He founded the Cornerstone Academy for Social Action Middle School (CASA) in the Bronx—an institution that has risen to prominence as one of New York City’s most recognized public middle schools. Bowman has a future in politics, he would be a great pick for thinking about the future

  • Elizabeth Warren- Economy wiz, Warren is still a firecracker. Given the job, I believe she could target some of the pressure points and provide some fresh solutions. As a teacher, she dedicated her career to studying why families go broke and fighting to rebuild the middle class. Everyone talking about inflation but Warren has been warning and educating us about this for years.

  • Beto O'Rourke - Beto is fun, he has a lot of heart. He wants a big job and the people of Texas haven’t risen to the occasion. I think he would be a great VP. He was born and raised in El Paso, where he has served as a small business owner, a city council representative, and a member of Congress

No matter who she decides to choose, LET'S WIN THIS!
